Artist's Comments

This is General Grievous, before his ship blew up and he became mostly droid/cyborg. A commission job to make General Grievous, but because there are so many sculptures and toys of him as a cyborg, I decided to make the one and only Qymaen jai Sheetal... enjoy!

A foot tall! It's amazing! It's a bit creepy but I think that's what it makes it so real to the character. : D

Very nice sculpture :) But I want to mention that Grievous' name in the past was Qymaen jai Sheelal not Sheetal. ;)

And by the way what is it made of? I mean I make sculptures myself so planty of material is needed to make such a sculpture or did you use aluminum foil inside?

ahh i had the spelling wrong, thanks for pointing that out! i don't know if i can change it though; i will see.

i start with wire armature for the structure, then depending on the thickness, i will build up with newspaper (for thickest areas), taped it on with masking tape, then use aluminum foil for smaller areas. i use magic sculpt for most of it because it is cheaper then other clays, and it is strong. i like using super sculpey extra firm grey for fine detail work, especially in faces. and i use acrylic paints as well, and ink washes (mostly brown, black and shades of red). the acrylics are generally pretty basic bought from dickblick. sometimes if i need a special color i will use one from a miniatures line (i used to paint a lot of mini's). good luck with your sculpts! i am hoping to do a few more star wars characters in the future; there is a lot on my plate right now.. i like to pick ones that aren't well known or that i find something beautiful about that i want to express through art.

Thanks for the answer! :) I use a little bit different technic... I sculpt with different materials but my favourite one is Apoxie Sculpt.

To change the spelling just click on "Edit deviation" on this page - it's on the left side :D

ah yes, i have heard of apoxie sculpt. i have never tried it, but i believe it is similar to magic sculpt. magic sculpt is 2 part, obviously, and when mixed, it starts really soft and hardens over about 3-4 hours, really hard, like rock hard. i buy 20 lbs at a time for about $100, which is cheaper then super sculpey which is about $10 per pound. so i use magic sculpt for larger structures and to add onto already hardened areas. the super sculpey is nice because it stays wet until you bake it, so i can keep changing it over days or weeks until i get it just right. sometimes i will do a sculpture all in super sculpey and then cut out sections one at a time, and refill those areas with magic sculpt instead (the final piece is much more durable that way too). ok well take care and good luck!
